Notice Negative Thoughts

The first step in overcoming sexual shame is to notice and challenge negative thoughts. When feelings of guilt or embarrassment arise, take a moment to identify them. Are these thoughts based on facts, or are they influenced by societal expectations or personal experiences?

Try this: keep a journal where you jot down any shame-related thoughts you encounter. Once you see them on paper, you can evaluate whether they hold any truth. Often, we find that these thoughts are not only unfounded but also harmful.

Examine Your Value System

Understanding your value system is crucial in overcoming sexual shame. Reflect on what you truly believe about sexuality, pleasure, and intimacy. Are your beliefs influenced more by your upbringing, culture, or external pressures than by what you genuinely feel?

Take the time to explore your values. Ask yourself:

  • What do I believe about my own body and desires?
  • What messages did I receive about sex growing up?
  • How do my beliefs align with what I want for my sexual health and happiness?

This self-exploration can help you establish a more empowering narrative about your sexuality.

Practice Self-Compassion
